Fairtrade Products – A collection with a conscience
In honour of Fairtrade Coffee Week, we thought it would be a great idea to put together a collection that highlighted local Fairtrade Coffee suppliers as well as other suppliers who are producing certified Fairtrade items.
We came across the Fairtrade Label SA website and found a wealth of information on the topic, including the fact that wine has become one of the most important Fairtrade products in the country, and that Thandi Wines were the first wine producer in the world to be Fairtade certified in 2003.
Bean There Coffee are another shining example in the local landscape. Established in 2005 they were the first and only roaster of Certified Fairtrade coffee in South Africa for some time.
Now Woolworths Cafe have announced that all coffee-based beverages sold in the over 70 Woolworths coffee shops around the country will be Fairtrade certified, which will double the amount of Fairtrade coffee currently available to South Africans, and generate a yearly Fairtrade Premium of over R180,000 for small-scale coffee farmers in East Africa.

Water Sports & Warm Welcomes
Durban’s newly revamped promenade is something to see.
Once a hairy pit of urban decay and filth, the area is now sparkling and alive with activity in the form of runners, bikers, skateboarders, surfers, paddlers and tourists.
It’s fantastic to see how Durban’s municipality envisaged and brought to life this mammoth project. We can only hope that they are able to maintain it.
On the furthest side of the promenade rests uShaka Marine World and just to the left of that you will find the also recently refurbished Marine Surf Lifesaving Club.
The design of the new building is beautiful. It’s all clean lines with minimalist industrial finishes and plenty of glass to make the most of the magnificent views.
On the one hand the club is a home base for many members who enjoy water sports like stand-up paddling, canoeing, surfing and swimming. It’s also a training facility for lifeguards and nippers, who go on to protect the surrounding beaches. The bottom half of the building neatly & safely houses all necessary equipment & has lockers for members, while the top half is left wide open for social activities.
The decor inside the clubhouse is sparse but surprisingly funky with beanbags, couches and benches. It’s certainly the kind of place you would bring your family on a Saturday morning for breakfast or hang out with friends after your ocean-based activities. The vibe is warm & welcoming, even for non-members and the balcony boasts an unparalleled and uninterrupted ocean view. Continue reading

100 Percent Passion at Pink Peppercorn
Working within a highly competitive business landscape can be challenging but Rabea Scholtz and Candice Fortune are up for the challenge because for them, running Pink Peppercorn Catering is a total labour of love.
The two friends met while working together for a large catering company. After they teamed up to cater for a friend’s wedding one weekend, they realised they were a dynamite duo and decided to go into business together. It took just a couple of months before Pink Peppercorn was up & running.
When deciding on a base for operations, Rabea and Candice took into account several factors. The location needed to be central, affordable, the right size and not too far out for their staff to travel at irregular hours.
In the end, they found just what they were looking for in the neighbourhood of Bishop Lavis. Continue reading
